Until recently, the previous army-captain-turned-congressman had been a fringe right-wing sound in Brazilian politics. On Sunday, Bolsonaro won 55.1 % of this vote in front of their left-wing opponent, Fernando Haddad, and was announced Brazil’s next president.
Bolsonaro was called “the Trump of this tropics, ” but his fans would rather call him “the Legend. ” He has got already been referred to as the “the most misogynistic, hateful elected official when you look at the democratic world”. His appeal has exploded as Brazilian voters grew fed up with increasing criminal activity prices, government corruption scandals, plus a financial recession with no end up in sight.
Bolsonaro has freely praised the country’s brutal former army dictatorship and stated so it should have killed 30,000 more people—“If several innocent individuals die, that’s alright”—and even devoted their vote to impeach Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff up to an army colonel accused of torturing 500 left-wing dissidents. Their record on LGBTQ legal rights, women’s liberties, and native legal rights shows exactly the same vicious, narrow-minded prejudice.
